Bike Month may be over, but Bike Summer is just starting! Posted: 2010-06-03 This year's Team Bike Challenge, part of the annual Bike Month celebration sponsored by 511.org, has ended. The dust has settled, and at the top of the rankings in Marin County are the Tamiscal Firebirds of Tamiscal High School with 963, repeating their victory from Team Bike Challenge 2008. The Firebirds' finish also managed to score them sixth place in the overall competition, out of 542 teams from all nine Bay Area counties. Good job Firebirds, and congratulations to everyone who participated! You made Team Bike Challenge 2010 the largest ever. But what's that you say? Bike Month is done, but you still can't get enough of bicycling? Your friends and family are clamoring for more? Never fear, WalkBikeMarin's regional partners have plenty more in store for logging your bicycling trips this summer. The iBikeChallenge is a year-round individual competition, much like the Team Bike Challenge, where you record your bike trips and earn points for how each day you ride your bike and for how far you travel. In addition to tracking your bike trips overall, a rotating monthly leaderboard will be posted so you can compete to be the top bicycle commuter each month. There's even a free iPhone application that helps you track your iBikeChallenge trips simply and easily. If you'd rather watch a challenge a bit closer to home, check out the Bike Locally Challenge organized by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition. Six Marin County residents are being equipped with new Globe bikes, accessories, and mentors to help them transform the way they use transportation over the next six months. The Challenge is just one part of the Bike Locally Campaign, which is also targeting several Marin County businesses in a Commuter Challenge to give employees the support and skills to bike to work year-round.
