A contract for the first phase of work - the rehabilitation of the tunnel and construction of the multiuse pathway in the tunnel - was let and work began on October 6, 2008.  This phase of work is expected to be completed by December 2009.  The first 120 feet of the tunnel is now reinforced on the San Rafael side with structural steel “sets” and work has begun at the south portal to remove the collapsed structure and begin work from the south side as well.  

Once all 280 structural “sets” are in place, work will begin on the preparation of the roadbed for the track and construction of the multiuse pathway in the tunnel.  Plans are underway to begin work on the remainder of the multiuse pathway outside the tunnel at this time.

It is anticipated that work will begin on this second and final phase in July 2009 and is expected to be complete by December 2009 as well.
